
Metallic Expansion Joints

Metallic expansion joints are essential components in piping systems subjected to thermal changes, vibration, pressure, and structural movement. Their primary function is to absorb the stresses generated by the natural expansion and contraction of materials, preventing damage to piping networks, welds, anchors, and connected equipment.
The core of every metallic expansion joint is the bellows—a series of convolutions manufactured through hydroforming or mechanical forming. This design allows the component to flex along one or multiple axes without compromising sealing integrity, reducing mechanical stress, preventing leaks, and extending the service life of the system.
They are used across a broad range of industries, including refineries, petrochemical plants, power generation facilities, industrial HVAC systems, process plants, steam systems, hot gas lines, and pipelines subject to continuous thermal fluctuations. In these environments, temperature swings can produce several centimeters of expansion— movement that would be impossible to manage without a dedicated compensating element.
Manufactured from stainless steels and high-performance alloys such as Inconel® and Hastelloy®, these joints offer outstanding resistance to corrosion, thermal cycling, mechanical fatigue, and vibration. Their design must comply with EJMA and ASME standards, which define requirements for pressure calculations, allowable cycle life, lateral loads, and safety criteria.
